Yesterday marked this as a first in our household. Inspired by silent meditation retreats and other silent mindfulness practices, my husband I decided to invoke “Silent Sunday”… for the morning only.
No TV, music, or talking. As we went about preparing the breakfast meal and cleaning up after it, there was a rhythm and melody to the various sounds inherent in these tasks. Water flowing from the sink. Food crackling in the skillet. The knife scraping against toast. Birds chirping outside in the sun. The wind chime making gentle music. We ate our morning breakfast in silence, really focusing on the food. We glanced at each other and smiled, sharing a knowing gaze of relaxation.
We so rarely stop to listen to how life can sound when we are not being drowned out with other noises. It was comforting. And relaxing.
Taking some time to just be silent can really transition you into a more relaxed state of mind. Our first Silent Sunday Morning was very calming and we plan to continue this practice.
