Today I am grateful for the power of muscle memory. As I dragged my sorry butt to the gym this morning, I was really not interested in putting my body through its paces. Since today is a Friday, I was ready to take a break from all the workouts. But, I reminded myself of why I want to be healthy, and off I went.
I used to love doing walking lunges. They are great for working your legs and if you do enough of them at a good pace, you get a decent cardio workout. But now, walking lunges are the one activity that are sure to highlight how wobbly my right leg is. There is so much balance and strength that goes into their motion — I often feel inept and frustrated when I do them.
Something different happened today. I found my legs performing better than usual. Sure, I was still wobbly at times. Sometimes I faltered but I noticed that each motion started correctly. Not every stride felt confident but it happened often enough that I found myself smiling (even as my legs were burning).
The muscles in my legs remember how to do this. Even if some strides are weak and wobbly, I need to focus on the rest that were so fluid. My legs need to take over while my fearful brain needs to get out of their way.
Just thinking about this for the rest of the day has lifted my spirit. Celebrate these little accomplishments and build on their power!
